Somoma County M.E.N. Hotline 528-2636 How to Recognize Domestic Violence

Physical abuse… The use of force to change the behavior or attitudes of family members is physical violence.  In fact, any form of bodily contact that injures or causes fear is physically violent behavior.  That includes pushing, tripping, blocking, throwing things, destroying property and harming pets.

Emotional abuse… Name calling, put-downs, demeaning accusations and malicious teasing is verbally violent behavior calculated to intimidate and deprive family members of their dignity and self-esteem.

Sexual Abuse… Any sexual act that is forced, coerced or performed under threat is clearly violent behavior.  So is the continuation of sexual acts when consent has been withdrawn or becomes unclear.

Financial abuse… Refusing to purchase family necessities and withholding money out of anger or to assert control is abusive behavior.
